Why are GPs sometimes referred to as "health care professionals" shouldnt they be called illness professionals

Public Comments

  1. General practitioners are well-rounded trained doctors who see a wide range of things, so it may not be necessarily correct to call them illness professionals either.
  2. GPs are the primary care physicians of most and their goal is health for their patients. If people would go in for a physical each year, keep current on their vaccinations, listen to the doctor re: his advice on what they need to do (or stop doing), and get medical concerns addressed, they'd be a lot healthier. Too many people will only do part of that--many won't have a physical--what if he finds something wrong? They can't afford the physical because they have no insurance. They go but do what they want, including lighting up their cigarettes before walking to the car to the nearest bar before driving through the fast food drivethrough for a nice, artery clogging Supersized meal. Is there a real surprise that the doc then works with "illness" instead of optimizing health? We have some responsibility in this mess too.
